Mad Madame Lalaurie

Who Were the Lalauries?

Delphine Lalaurie and her husband, Dr. Louis Lalaurie, were a wealthy society couple who lived in New Orleans in the late 1820's and early 1830's. When their mansion on Royal Street caught fire in 1834, a group of starved and abused slaves were discovered in their attic. It was around this shocking event that a New Orleans legend was born.

Delphine Lalaurie (born Marie Delphine Macarty) was a French Creole lady, born in Louisiana. She came from a wealthy and respected family. Delphine was known for her exceptional beauty from the time she was a little girl. She was married twice before she met and married Dr. Louis Lalaurie. There was never a hint of scandal about her until she and Dr. Lalaurie moved to the house on Royal street.

Dr. Louis Lalaurie was born in France. He attended medical school there before moving to New Orleans. He was quite a bit younger than his society belle wife, and was often described as "nondescript" or "retiring." However, there was a hidden dark side to his personality.
